Artist Bio
“The Soul of James Brown” is a tribute concert that will feature a 12-piece band, Just Soul, fronted by James Brown impersonator, Ty Stone.
He portrays the Godfather of Soul as the suave, sweaty and super bad young singer who stormed the charts in the ‘60s with scorched earth hits like “Cold Sweat”, “Out of Sight” and “Papa’s Got a Brand new Bag” and the show stopping “This is a Man’s World”!!!
Brown, who died in 2006, introduced funk to the American mainstream. His 1963 album, “Live at the Apollo” frequently is included in critics’ lists of the best albums of all time. His songs have been sampled by countless rappers and hip-hop artists. “I’ve seen Michael Jackson, “Stone says, “I’ve seen everybody. There’s nothing like a James Brown show. The man was amazing.”
Stone saw his first James Brown concert when he was a youngster in Chicago…
“I was like, 11 years old. I came out of there my eyes were big as saucers. I’d never seen anything like that in my life.” He and his friends became hooked on mastering the man’s moves. They would pool their money so they could buy one $4.50 ticket to one of his concerts. The lucky one who got to see the show had to memorize the moves and show them to everybody else afterward.
Brown was notoriously strict with his band, which included guitarist Jimmy Nolen, saxophonist Maceo Parker, drummer Clyde Stubblefield and singer Bobby Byrd. Stone says he expects similar discipline from his musicians, backup singers and dancers.
“Half the time, the band can’t stand me. They want to beat me up because I’m so demanding.” Stone says, laughing. ‘There’s a certain amount of discipline James Brown’s musicians had.”
In concert, Brown is a perpetual motion machine who spun, danced and dropped to his knees. Stone says he loses 8 to 10 pounds per night playing Brown.
“I have to get out and run and work out every day to keep my weight down. Nobody wants to see a fat James Brown.”
Stone’s show features highlights from Brown’s legendary early shows, from the extravagant introduction by an emcee to the fabled cape routine. “Those double spins get you dizzy sometimes” he says. “It’s like, Where am I?” “That’s right… Doing what I Love Best, Entertaining”…
Ty Stone follows right in the footsteps and has earned the titles – Mr. Dynamite, Soul Brother Number One and the Hardest Working Man in Show Business – testament to his mesmerizing stage presence and larger-than-life persona.
